Island Logistics
Everything you need to know about getting to and navigating Great Exuma. From car rentals to the best time to buy groceries.
Getting There
Main Hub
Exuma International Airport (GGT) is your entry point to paradise.
International Flights
Direct service from Miami (American), Atlanta (Delta), Charlotte (American), and Fort Lauderdale (Silver/Aztec).
From Nassau
Bahamasair and Western Air offer multiple daily 35-45 minute flights.
Insider Tip
Flights are daylight-only; ensure your connections allow for arrival before sunset to avoid delays.
Getting Around
Car Rentals
Essential for exploring. We recommend Airport Car Rental or Thompson’s. Book well in advance during peak season.
Driving Rules
We drive on the LEFT side of the road. Most roads are two-lane; take it slow on the unpaved beach paths.
Vehicle Choice
A Jeep or SUV is highly recommended for reaching the more secluded beaches like Coco Plum.
Provisions & Shopping
Exuma Markets
Located in George Town. Best selection of groceries. The supply boat arrives on Mondays—shop Tuesday for the freshest produce.
Prime Island Meats
Top-tier butcher shop and deli. Perfect for stocking up for a villa BBQ.
Liquor Stores
Smitty’s and Bristol Wines are the main spots for spirits, wine, and local Kalik or Sands beer.
Health & Safety
Medical Care
The George Town Community Clinic and the modern Doctors Hospital Health System clinic are available for non-emergencies.
Emergencies
In serious cases, medical evacuation to Nassau or Miami is required. Ensure your travel insurance covers med-evac.
Water
While city water is treated, most locals and visitors prefer bottled water for drinking.
Island Essentials
Currency
USD and Bahamian Dollars are 1:1 and used interchangeably. Cash is essential for small vendors and tips.
Connectivity
Most villas offer Wi-Fi, but expect slower speeds than the mainland. BTC and Aliv are local mobile providers.
Sunday Closures
Many shops and some restaurants close on Sundays. Plan your provisioning accordingly.
